Ascent's team completed the construction and commissioning of a 69kV transmission station in Lameque, New Brunswick. Our scope of work on this project included site civil work (foundations and footings, oil containment pit, ground grid installation, steel erection, equipment installation and commissioning). Equipment installed and commissioned included one 69kV- 33/41/50 MVA transformer, lightning arresters CT’s, VT’s, circuit switcher and distribution switchgear. We also performed point-to-point wire checks and relay setting verification. While this is a construction project, the commissioning tests were as, if not more, complex than maintenance tests.
During a recent completed maintenance on two customers' substations, the window allocated for the hydro shutdown was short. One facility had 6 hours with a crew of 16 technicians and the second 8 hours with a crew of 12 technicians. Lots of coordination was required to complete this intensive amount of work. As a result of our large complement of staff, Ascent was able to complete both services on time and on budget. One substation was back on line with 20 minutes to spare and the other was back 45 minutes early. Both customers appreciated the professional and knowledgable workmanship that we provided.
At Ascent, we react in a timely manner to customer inquiries. One such project happened to be after hours on a Sunday evening when we received an emergency call from a customer and went on site to investigate. Within an 18 hour span, we had them back up running with a new replacement piece of equipment -- even though this equipment typically has a 16 to 20 week long lead time for delivery. This is one of Ascent's value-added services: we have the largest privately owned inventory of equipment in Canada, ranging from new to used, transformers, switchgears, Lightning Arrestors, fuses, etc.
Ascent has been a major player in the renewable industry, with a strong position in medium to high voltage supply, design and construction. Combining wind and solar, we have been involved in close to 750 MW. Most recently, a large solar developer turned to us to provide resources to build and commission their substation. We were able to assist the customer in maintaining their accelerated schedule.
